Terra Cotta Lamp (01.0003.5)

Byzantine Period 324-638 CE
Greek Translation reads “Light of Christ Shines beautifully for All” on rim, nozzle decorated with palm branch.
Note: Earlier scholars believed decoration to be a menorah. Some of the candlestick lamps bear Christian inscriptions in Greek around the filling hole: the common inscription “the light of Christ shines beautifully for all”. Pilgrims could participate in services and return home with a souvenir.
John 12:13 “Took the branches of the palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried out, Hosanna: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel.”
